In Grand Island and across central Nebraska, shooting sports are part of a tradition built around outdoor recreation, responsible firearm ownership, skill development, and community involvement.

That tradition is on display each year at the Grand Island Gun Show, presented by the Grand Island Gun Club as a fundraiser supporting the club’s activities. The annual event brings together firearms enthusiasts, collectors and visitors interested in exploring the history, equipment and culture surrounding shooting sports.

The show continues to grow, with something new for visitors in 2026. During the October 24-25 event, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission shooting gallery, located in the Nebraska Building, is being opened for the show, adding an interactive experience for attendees.

Grand Island is also home to other major youth shooting sports events. The 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships bring competitors from across the country to Nebraska, highlighting the importance of safety, discipline, responsibility, and sportsmanship in the next generation of shooting sports participants. Grand Island also hosts the Cornhusker State Games shooting Sports Competition each summer.

Together, these activities reflect an outdoor heritage that connects generations through education, competition and shared interests. From youth developing their skills through 4-H to enthusiasts gathering at the annual gun show, shooting sports remain an important part of the region’s recreational culture.

Whether you're attending the gun show or visiting Grand Island for one of its many outdoor and sporting events, you'll find a community with deep roots in Nebraska's outdoor traditions.

Navigate the Nebraska State Fair: The Birthing Pavilion

Baby pigs, a.k.a. piglets, I love to watch them! It may be my fondness for Winnie the Pooh and his best friend, Piglet, but I am a sucker for baby pigs. At the Nebraska State Fair, thousands of people like me can see these incredibly cute, pink, tiny babies at the Birthing Pavillion in abundance.
