Grand Island’s Liederkranz to host comedy festival amateur competition
The Viaero Great American Comedy Festival in its third year of honoring the legacy of the late Johnny Carson – is expanding into Grand Island. On Saturday, March 13, at 7 p.m., one of the festival’s amateur night preliminary competitions will be held at the Liederkranz in Grand Island.
"We’re pleased to be able to bring a part of the comedy festival to Grand Island. We think that central Nebraskans will enjoy taking in the show,” said Lora Young, the festival’s executive director.
One of the highlights of the festival itself each June in Norfolk is the amateur competition. Aspiring stand-up comedians compete to have a chance to audition before Eddie Brill, the talent coordinator for “The Late Show with David Letterman.” Brill serves as the comedy festival’s producer. To determine who has a chance to compete in Norfolk, four preliminary competitions are held each year. This year, two are being held in Norfolk, one in Lincoln and the fourth in Grand Island. Typically, about 12 comedians perform at each of the preliminary competitions. Dennis Collins of Norfolk, one of the finalists from last year’s competition, will serve as the emcee at Grand Island. Each comedian will perform a 6-minute routine. At the end of the evening, audience members vote for their favorites and the top two vote-getters qualify for the amateur finals in Norfolk.
The festival this year will be held June 16-20 in Norfolk at the Johnny Carson Theatre, with the amateur finals set for Wednesday, June 16. Tickets to the Grand Island event can be purchased for $10 and are available at www.greatamericancomedyfestival.com They also will be available at the door the evening of the performance.
