Stuhr - Cowgirls: Contemporary Portraits of the American West

March 10, 2010,

The American west is explored in a fascinating new way in "Cowgirls: Contemporary Portraits of the American West," a touring exhibit coming to Stuhr Museum February 3 through March 10.

Using stunning black and white photography, Ronnie Farley has captured women at work on ranches, at play in rodeos and in other settings that redefine long held notions of rural America and the people who live there. This exhibit, which was made available to Stuhr thanks to a generous grant from the

Mid-America Arts Alliance, has shown in much larger venues to considerable enthusiasm and acclaim. Stuhr is truly fortunate to be showing this exhibit.

From the exhibit: "Visiting ranches and rodeos all across the West, Ronnie Farley has gathered portraits of cowgirls - not showbiz cowgirl, but the real thing. Her subjects work in harsh, unpredictable climates, bring up families while they manage their ranches, and compete - and win - in rodeos alongside men. Her black-and-white photographs capture the spirit and energy of authentic working cowgirls and the raw beauty of the western landscape. Side by side with the photographs are testimonies in the women's own words to an America that is fast disappearing - one where conditions are hard, but hard work rewards them with the satisfaction of having lived life on their own terms."

Because of the special and powerful nature of this exhibit, the museum is proud to offer trained docent tours of the exhibit to interested groups. Those interested may contact Martha Paulsen at (308) 385-5316 ext. 201.
