J.
H. Murphy donated 2 acres for the Wood River Cemetery at an
organizational meeting of the Cemetery Association on January 4, 1879 …
interestingly enough James D. Cornwell (born 02-05-1846) was apparently
already buried on the property so he is the first burial, March 13, 1875
(4 years before the cemetery formed). Two more acres were donated on
February 1, 1879 by B. L. Colwell and in 1929, 3 additional acres were
purchased from a Dr. Green at $200.00 per acre. Two entrances, the
northern and southern, had brick pillars. March of 1879, J.H. Murphy was
charged with purchasing 300 plus cedar trees.
In
1909, the local G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) placed a monument
in the center of the cemetery. Stacked graduated concrete bases hold a 2
½ foot marble block with a soldier, gun at rest, on top. The
inscription includes the ‘Bradley Post No. 134, Womens Relief Corp No.
61 and citizens of Wood River and vicinity.’ The perimeter of pine trees
were planted in 1935. Veterans buried include 65 Civil War, 1 Spanish
American War, 34 WWI, 18 WWII, 4 Korea and 1 National Defense.
