In
1880, a cemetery committee formed to find a suitable location for the
Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Edmund Locke was on the South Loup Township
board, his wife; Lucinda died on April 12, 1880 and he buried her on the
homestead. His brother Julius Locke sold three acres of his land on a
hill west of his place in December 14, 1882 (1mile south and 1 1/4 west
of Cairo) for the cemetery. Lucinda’s reburial was the first grave in
the new Mt Pleasant Cemetery. There have been four additions since
... the cemetery now covers seven acres and has had over 600 burials.
