The U.S. Government in 1869 granted 6 acres of land to Nanna Harmon. It passed in 1872 to C.N. and P.C. Stall. In 1882, it was transferred to Casper Dunnermann who according to the Independent, May 12, 1885 “located a cemetery on a beautiful site one mile east of town, on a new elevation.” Later, in 1891, Dunnermann filed papers for the East Grand Island Cemetery.   It seems the “New City Cemetery” that formed in 1897 in the southwest area of Grand Island was the favored burial spot and in 1906, the East half of the East Grand Island Cemetery was vacated for lack of sold plots. The title eventually went to Gus Mettenbrink whose grandmother was a Dunnermann. Hall County paid $500.00 in the late 1990’s for new fencing and a sign.  Only a few graves remain of what was once a hopeful venture.
