The first burial ground was on land belonging to W.J. Burger, one of the earliest settlers, who operated a ‘road ranch’ (yesterday’s version of convenience store), early in the 1860’s, right where the Nebraska City-Fort Kearney Trail merged with the Ox Bow Trail. In 1880, the cemetery moved closer to Doniphan. Early city and cemetery records, as well as most of the town’s records, were destroyed in an explosion on November 6, 1887, in a failed bank robbery.
